Thank you San Carlos Adult Community Center for hosting such a lovely event. The classes were great, the food was wonderful and the amount of information that people left with was priceless. Congratulations on your first fair can't wait to see you next year!!!

Dave and Kathleen had great time fielding questions about the Elms. People around us saying if the staff has as much fun as you two do then I would want to live there too.

Wii Bowling at San Carlos Elms

Our first match up against the San Carlos Adult Community Center was so exciting. We played 3 matches and it was close The Elms was winning up to the 3 game, but the San Carlos Adult Community Center came back to win by 19 pins. Congratulations Adult Community Center Wii(we) will see you again in March (TBA), but it will be MADNESS!

Group picture was taken after all the bowling was done even though their was a winning team and a losing team, we all had a good time.

Thank you to all our Elms fans for coming out and cheering us on we couldn't have done it without your support.

Happy New Year! I hope I got enough cake for everyone. Take a look at our New Year Celebration. We had music, pictures, laughter, and new this year a San Carlos Elms Yearbook.

There wasn't an empty seat in the house. We all had a marvelous time.

Peter and Jeannette were very happy to ring in 2012 with their grand daughter.

The residents had a great time looking at their yearbooks and reminiscing on all the activities they had done in 2011.

While the assisted living side of The Elms was having their Holiday Party down stairs, the memory care, "The Grove" was having their own party upstairs. With musical guest Conrad on Guitar, the residents and staff sang along with him. It was a wonderful afternoon.

San Carlos Elms is proud to have Kathleen Sullivan-Activities Director, honored by SpiritCare Ministry to Seniors on 12/3/2011.

SpiritCare acknowledges 3 out of 62 Activities Directors per year. Kathleen was acknowledged by Dr. Grant Schoenhard. His comments: “Some people find gold, we found platinum with Kathleen. Her contribution and character enriches the community. We thank and honor her for what she continues to do.”

Tree Trimming Social at San Carlos Elms

Laughing Yoga?

A waste of time of something to do?

Yoga is joy through movement.

Have you ever experienced Laughing Yoga?

It is something hard to describe.

Is is really the same as Yoga?

Or something just implied?

Our leader from Sidney showed us what to do.

Clap hands, one clap, two claps

Faster now: one clap, two claps, three claps

Saying: HA, HA, HA, HO, HO, HO!

Find Sidney, Australia on the map.

Laughing Yoga is best done in a group.

With a leader to call the motions.

You follow like hens in a coop.

More like waves in the ocean.

Some of the participants said it was interesting.

Our leaser smiled and joked.

He seemed to try to make us laugh,

but he was no Groucho Marx or Jack Benny.

San Carlos Elms Remembers and Honors their Veterans

San Carlos Elms would like to Thank Girl Scout Troop 393 for presenting the colors and making such lovely poppy corsages for our residents for Veterans Day. It is a day that they will always have in their hearts.

The Girl Scout Troop helped pin all the resident who attended with special pins. Those who served, like Henry shown below received a pin with a red, white, and blue ribbon. Spouse or Family members received a poppy corsage.

We always have a good time when we bowl. Cheering one another on especially when someone picks up a 7/10 split like George and Don do on occasion.

Wii Bowling is getting pretty serious at San Carlos Elms. Irene bowled a 279 last Friday. 1 strike shy of a perfect game!

The Central Middle School kids came this time to read to our residents, but they had a special ending in mind. They ended with doing the Macarena for the residents, however Rosemary couldn't help herself she had to join in with the students. She showed them she still has the moves.

Halloween Path

That's the Elms, and I am a Resident

It's a large building on Elm and Cherry.

To show you- I won't be hesitant.

Front door opens to sad to merry.

Walk in through a large double door.

Up a wide an impressive path.

Which begins on Elm which has car galore.

To figure the size you need advanced math.

First you see a wooden bench to the left and to the right.

Say!There's Peter's bicycle.

It's a familiar sight.

But there are no little tricycles!

There is a big pair of orange and black boots.

The super long toes are pointed and curled.

Some one's Halloween boot--

covered with sparkles and pearls.

The other side has a large black ant.

It is scary and over a foot tall.

Oh, I'm beginning to pant.

Hang tight --I might fall.

The sides are lined with pumpkins and cornstalks.

About five on each side.

Some pumpkins have funny faces

who made these with pride?

Oh! There's a hay pile

With a darling stuffed couple on top

I would walk a mile to see their sunny smile.

It must be Halloween

To have all this.

From which to run and hide

but this all treat no trick.

San Carlos Elms Walks to Support the End of Alzheimer's

This is The San Carlos Elms Group that walked this year to support The Memory Walk and the End of Alzheimer's and Dementia.

This year at the walk we carried flowers each color flower represented something different;

Yellow: you were supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer's

Purple: you lost someone to Alzheimer's or Dementia

Orange: you support the cause and vision of a world with out Alzheimer's

Blue: you had Alzheimer's or Dementia

This year The Elms had additional support from Girl Scout Troop 393 & 824. They made posters with our residents photos on it from our memory care and walked for them.

Showing their support and love for The Elms the staff received the logo painted on their faces.

The Staff did a great job walking the 3 miles especially with the banner. We did a good job at staying together this year!!!

Executive Director Scott Evans and Director of Food Service Dave Kelly did a great job fielding questions and handing out coffee.

Laughing Yoga at San Carlos Elms

Nina our Laughing Yoga instructor, from Care Resource aging and adult care was a great Laughing Leader.

She taught us not just to laugh, but to laugh using all of our muscles and body.

We learned so much about our selves and each other through this great exercise. Thank you Nina!

Today we had our monthly lunch outing. The residents have been hearing about the local In & Out burger place in San Carlos, so we decided to go with the name of the restaurant. They ordered out but we brought it back in; we had a lovely day outside enjoying our burgers and each others company. They said they can't wait for the next time.

FamCam will bring video chat equipment to yo so that you ca video chat (see & hear) your family members who live far away. And it won't cost you a dime!

They will be visiting San Carlos Elms this Thursday, July 21 at 7pm to demonstrate what video chat is like. If your family signs up on Facebook, they might be able to participate in the demo. (you'd be able to see them!)

Lou is one of our residents who makes all of these beautiful necklaces as seen below with the winner of this months raffle Dick. Why you ask? To donate ALL the money to a kid's camp for children, through the Optimist Volunteers for Youth, who might not be able to attend other wise.

The staff in the kitchen is now helping out by making earings to match the necklaces Lou makes.

Dorothy was helping the dogs spread the word The Farmer Market is only for these over size dogs and no other dogs allowed.

Before we went to dinner we sat down at the park enjoyed the fresh air and the live music playing.

We all enjoyed the finally a nice dinner out at Spasso's on Laurel St. where we all shared a little bite of someones dessert, we each had our own spoon. It was a very entertaining evening.

There use to be a wall there, but not any more. The construction team is doing a "bang" up job getting the room completed.

You can see were the cabinets use to be, the counter, and the sink. We all can't wait for the finished product.

We are not letting the construction of our craft room get us down. We are enjoying each others company outside in the beautiful weather we have been having this past week. The residents were so happy to have a warm spot to have a cup of tea and a place to create their Art.

How clear to all it would be

might be before the new moon!

Next day we rushed to see when?

Same sign still there

I looked for construction men

Who has news to share?

A week later

Some sign as we walk by

a month later

Same, with a sigh and sigh.

Low and behold! It has Started!

Men and tools all over

The rooms will be parted

Did men come from faraway Dover?

All activities are in rooms 108 and 110.

Signs on these doors now say "Residents Play House"

The workers are Nexgen

Are not as quiet as a mouse.

They close the doors into two rooms

And open them into one!

With a help of a hammer, saw and brooms

The "breakthrough" is done!

Lou is one of our residents who has been making necklaces for years then selling them. Why you ask? To donate ALL the money to a kid's camp for children, through the Optimist Volunteers for Youth, who might not be able to go other wise. Let's help Lou and these kids go to camp this summer and the next.

I did not know --neither did she

A great piece we did take.

The top was covered with red roses

made of whipped cream

How many? We didn't count noses.

It was like a wonderful dream.

Why did Kathleen do all that?

Kathleen is such a Dear.

It makes me huff and puff!

We had a surprise poetry reading today for our published residents who were in CALA News & Views magazine. We were so proud of Lou and Rosemary that we had this party just for them. I think the pictures speak for themselves. Also, following their pictures are their poems which I hope you enjoy.

Retirement Home - Just Moved In

You arrive as a stranger in a strange land,

but with no one beside you holding your hand.

A whole forest of people comes into view,

You want to know them and they want to know you.

New personalities unique to behold,

It's like watching the bud of a rose unfold.

Working to remember names of this long parade,

You need and wish for a good memory aid.

Yes, truly an adventure to know each one,

And then, you discover, their is still more to come!

To Sit and Dream

While looking for a place to sit

and dream; such as a deep forest,

or a splashing ocean; it would seem;

But, I saw a chair and flopped into it.

In dreams I saw Redwood trees

and sun so bright.

But; sitting all I saw was my

bony knees and the glare of a car tail light.

Oh, dreams of sailing ship- flying

in the wind-No.

The hard chair crushed my hips

against the ground I was pinned.

In dreams a lovely scent filled the air

really the car exhaust was hard to bear.

I dream of beautiful buildings

of ancient Greek design

i knew the buildings across the street

were dirty and benign.

Then I really looked across the street,

and saw a yard full of poppies.

Dreams are reality.

I heard a crow call.

The seat became softer.

The front terrace really is a

Lovely place to sit and dream.

Lou is one of our residents has been making necklaces for years then selling them. Why you ask? To donate ALL the money to a kid’s camp for children, through the Optimist Volunteers for Youth, who might not be able to go other wise. Let's help Lou and these kids go to camp this summer.

Girl Scout Troop Visit

The Girl Scout Troop visited San Carlos Elms this afternoon; they performed some songs and a couple of skits that our residents enjoyed. We had a good afternoon of laughter. Thank you Girl Scouts. Hope to see you back real soon!

Just Me

by resident: Lou Mohler

As I've grown older, my ears now ring.

My high soprano voice, no longer wants to sing.

My ring finger on my right hand is deformed,

My big toe sticks up like a piece of corn!

But my eyes can see! I can read it all!

Magazines, books, newspapers - so I have a ball!

I'm presently living in a home for old folks.

Some are lots of fun with smiles and jokes.

I'm thankful to be with those of my age,

Regardless of any deformities at this stage.

We can laugh and enjoy a life full of fun.

Plus, I'm lucky to be in the California sun!

Brownie Troop Visit

We enjoyed the visit that we had from the Brownie Troop today. They read books to our residents, handed out Girl Scout cookies and cards with jokes on them. We hope they come back soon.

A Fun Party

Kathleen has the tables all set.
Thousands of hearts were all around.
She did it before we all met.
Cookies and choice of drinks did abound.

The necklace lady told me-
“Valentines Day party was fun”
Everyone was happy that I would see
Lou said she was “the happiest one”

The craft room was crowded.
There were no empty seats
Joy couldn’t be doubled!
One could not hear any heart beats!

Dorothy said “We’re having fun.”
Marge said “watching people”
No one could find the sun
or hear bells in a steeple.

One nice man couldn’t remember his name.
Henry said it was James or Jim.
Both work the same-
We all laughed with him.

If you missed the party—too bad!
Just wait a whole year.
You have a right to feel sad.
Such memories we hold dear.

Alyce Bishop a resident of San Carlos Elms was awarded 2010 Volunteer of the Year on behalf on NCCAC,( Northern California Council of Activity Coordinators).

Alyce helps, not only at The Elms in Activities, but also at her local church and the San Carlos Library. We here at San Carlos Elms could not be more proud and think of anyone more deserving than our own resident Alyce, for 2010 Volunteer of the Year Congratulations Alyce!
